Carnatic music and self awareness for children

Workshop on Carnatic music and self awareness for children

Carnatic music is gaining popularity in the world music scene especially among the youngsters in India. Unlike earlier, the youth are becoming more open to listening to Carnatic music and appreciate its nuances. Thanks to the media and the internet, accessing Carnatic music has also become a much easier task when compared to the yesteryears. Nowadays there is a lot of music awareness among children as the musical reality shows on television have provided them with platforms for honing and showcasing their skills. Some children have the aptitude, interest and passion for Carnatic music. These are the children who clearly show their musical skills and talents very early in their lives. Systematic training is integral to perfection in Carnatic music. This workshop on carnatic music and self awareness for children conducted under the auspices of Manirang- The Neyyattinkara Foundation and Sruthilaya Dubai, attempts to assess the musical and psychological profiles of the participants and to provide them with a holistic orientation to Carnatic music rendition.

Manirang Foundation stands for initiatives and dreams that Neyyattinkara Vasudevan had about music and art. Named after the raga he loved most, Manirang Foundation is all about music. Neyyattinkara Vasudevan’s strict adherence to tradition and yet innovating within it, unique style of raga elaboration, rendering of compositions in appropriate tempo, compact swaraprasthara and above all his capacity to build a rapport with the accompanying artists as well as his listeners brought him encomiums in India and abroad. The philosophy of his music is the one which could be emulated by aspiring students of Carnatic music. This workshop aims at providing a platform for music-related discussions among children and thereby popularizing Carnatic music. The aspects addressed in the programme would be based on the methodology, distinct style and unique techniques followed by Late Sri Neyyattinkara Vasudevan in mentoring and training his disciples.
